Belmonte is situated on a plain between Jequitinhonha river and Atlantic Ocean. This city developed itself in the good times of cocoa cultivation, in the end of 19th century. The topography of the place is hilly, with numerous hills intersected by valleys. Some places have an exotic beauty, as Praia do Sul, Praia do Mar, Praia do Mar Moreno and Praia do Garuzau. This peculiarity exists because of the meeting between Jequitinhonha river and Atlantic Ocean. The taste and the color of the sea are quite different.
